Johann Johannson's mythical journey
Jóhan Jóhannsson's Orphée on Deutsche Grammophon (released September 2016) is sublime. It evokes the human emotion of an Hellenic myth made real and also stands as a series of evocative moving vignettes, each with their own frail beauty.
The ethereal 'number station' voices sound like something one might hear reflecting across the water of the Styx both literally and metaphorically sounding of "an undiscovered country" as the bard might have said.
The Icelandic composer creates gorgeous textures from the ether and it is therefore no surprise that his other worldly creations inspired the producers of Arrival to commission him to write their score.
